Biography

Saint Dominic Ninh (Vietnamese: Đaminh Ninh) (born c. 1835 or 1841 in Trung Linh, Nam Định Province, Vietnam – died June 2, 1862, in An Triêm, Nam Định Province, Vietnam) was a martyr and a saint of the Catholic Church. Dominic Ninh was born in Trung Linh in Nam Định Province. His marriage was arranged by his father, but they eventually separated. Afterward, Dominic Ninh devoted himself to studying the Chinese language and script. When the persecution of Christians in Vietnam intensified, Dominic Ninh was expelled from his village and subsequently imprisoned. He was beheaded on June 2, 1862, in An Triêm. His feast day is November 24, as part of the group of 117 Vietnamese Martyrs. He was beatified on April 29, 1951, by Pius XII and canonized by John Paul II on June 19, 1988, as one of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs.
