Biography

Benedict of Assisi (Benedetta di Assisi), also referred to as Benoîte d'Assisi in some texts, was an Italian nun born in Assisi in the 13th century. Her family was one of the most powerful in Assisi. She became a nun of the Order of Poor Ladies in 1214, among the disciples of Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi, whom she succeeded as abbess of the Convent of San Damiano from 1253 until her death in 1260. The Franciscan Martyrology states that her life shone with singular prudence and a great reputation for virtue and miracles. She is commemorated by the Catholic Church on March 16.
