Biography

Basil of Braga is a Portuguese saint. According to the tradition of Braga, he was the second Bishop of Braga, serving between 60 and 95 AD. Previously, he was the first Bishop of Meinedo, a historical diocese in the Porto region. He received episcopal ordination from the hands of Saint Peter of Rates, the first Bishop of Braga. The Agiológio Lusitano, by Jorge Cardoso, recounts his martyrdom. Due to his virtues and martyrdom, he was declared a saint by the Catholic Church and is commemorated on May 23.
