Saint Athanasius of Caesaraugusta

Biography

Saint Athanasius, of unknown birth and death date and place, is according to tradition the first bishop of Zaragoza, serving from the year 39 until 59, when he was martyred near the city by troops of Nero who had come in search of him. His body is presumed to be buried in Santiago de Compostela next to his master, Saint James the Great, and it is believed he was of Galician origin. He was a disciple of Saint James who, according to tradition, brought the body of his master from Palestine to Galicia in the company of Theodore; both are represented on the east facade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, at the so-called Holy Door.
