Saint Aristeus of Capua

303 · Early Church

Biography

Aristeus (died c. 303) was a hieromartyr and Bishop of Capua. His feast day is July 2. Saint Aristeus is often identified with Agrestius Chromatius, who served as a Roman prefect in the 280s. In 286, he moved from Rome to Sinuessa and was subsequently appointed Bishop of Capua. He participated in the Synod of Sinuessa, signing the documents of the first session. He was later martyred on July 2 during the Great Persecution. It is also possible that he is the same person as Saint Ariston, who is also commemorated on July 2.
