Saint Apollonios the Anchorite

Biography

Apollonius lived in the 4th century. Canonized by the Orthodox Church, he is liturgically celebrated on January 21, the date of his martyrdom. Apollonius was an anchorite in the Thebaid. Imprisoned during the persecution of Diocletian in 311 in the city of Antinoöpolis, Apollonius was held captive and, as was the custom in Eastern prisons, he was visible to passersby; only bars separated him from the crowd.
