Biography

Saint Anthony Nguyễn Đích (Vietnamese: Antôn Nguyễn Đích) (born c. 1769 in Chi Long, Vietnam; died August 12, 1838, in Bảy Mẫu, Vietnam) was a martyr and a saint of the Catholic Church. Anthony Nguyễn Đích was born in Chi Long. His parents were religious, and believing they lived too far from the church, they moved to Kẻ Vĩnh, where Anthony later married. He was the father of 10 children. During a period of persecution, he provided space in his home for two years to teach seminarians. Bishop Havard also hid in his home for a time. Anthony Nguyễn Đích was arrested alongside Father James Đỗ Mai Năm and his son-in-law, Michael Nguyễn Huy Mỹ. Authorities attempted to force him to renounce his faith through persuasion and torture. He was beheaded on August 12, 1838, together with James Đỗ Mai Năm and his son-in-law. His feast day is November 24, as part of the group of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs. He was beatified on May 27, 1900, by Leo XIII and canonized by John Paul II on June 19, 1988, as one of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs.
