Biography
Amnichad of Fulda (died January 30, 1043) was a Benedictine monk who spent the end of his life as a recluse at Fulda Abbey. He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church. Amnichad was born in Scotland. He became a monk and entered a monastery on the island of Inis Cealtra in Lough Derg, Ireland. It is said that he was forced to leave the convent by order of the abbot because he had given drink to visiting foreign monks without permission. He traveled to Fulda, where he had himself walled into the crypt beneath the mortuary chapel—the present-day St. Michael's Church—at the local monastery for a life of asceticism and prayer. He is said to have spent twenty years in this place until his death. He was also venerated because various miracles were reportedly performed at his sarcophagus. Amnichad’s feast day is January 30.
