Biography

Saint Altfried (died April 22, 849) was Bishop of Münster and abbot of the monasteries of Werden and Helmstedt. Following the death of his predecessor Gerfried, Altfried was appointed the third Bishop of Münster in 839. Like Gerfried, he was a nephew of Liudger, the first Bishop of Münster, and he authored his biography, the Vita Liudgeri. In the same year, Altfried, whose name means "noble protector" or "elf prince," became the fifth abbot of Werden Abbey. His tenure saw the completion of the monastery's Liudger crypt, where he was interred following his death in 849.
